Day 1 in Southern Arizona... Picacho Peak, Biosphere 2, & the Catalinas! April, 2014

A wonderful last weekend with my travel RN buddy, Kelsey! We realized at the last minute we were both off the whole weekend, so I planned a trip to Tucson & southern Arizona for us, and we had a blast!! Thrown in are some random quotes from the weekend...

Climbing Picacho Peak. Thanks for the recommendation, Kim!

I am obsessed with desert colors.

How cool is this pattern of cactus & shrubs on the desert floor?

This climb was incredibly steep; thankfully it had some guard rails & cables to help pull yourself up & make sure you didn't fall over the edge.

We were the only ones on this hike. Well, after the first mile we were the only ones. After a 1/4 mile of hiking we met this guy we will call Juan, with a straw hat, large belt buckle, and jeans. Juan told us we were silly to have so much water for us, and that drinking water on long hikes is actually bad for you. He continued to give us unsolicited, horrible advice while we were stopping to catch our breath. At one point I tried to politely tell him that what he was saying made no sense and that we had to have water for such a long hike in the sun. We did not see Juan at the end of the hike. I think he needs to do some more research... or just have some common sense.

Lunch at the top of the mountain!
"ALMOND butter?? Who ever heard of such a thing??!!"

Some beautiful rocks displaying bird poop. Lovely.

What a great hiking buddy!!

Its hard to tell how high up this is; but this is Picacho Peak!

We got a kick out of the hand crank paper towel in the bathroom! Our grandchildren will probably know nothing of these.

Next, we visited Biosphere 2. So fascinating. So huge. So weird.

"Where is Biosphere 1??"

The rainforest

"The Lung" was a reminder to us of the importance of a guided tour when you are in an unfamiliar place... art institute, botanical garden, biosphere 2, old historic mansion, etc. We walked in to this huge room, not having a clue what it was. We were snickering and laughing, saying that we wish we had our rollerskates... and then we found out it is a lung. It literally keeps the CO2 pressure inside Biosphere 2 at the right levels, and inflates and deflates accordingly. The joke was on us. Later we talked about how interesting it was that it went from being the most boring room (before we knew what it was), to the coolest thing we had ever seen, once we were explained!
We still wanted to put on a pair of rollerskates though.

I asked a couple of questions on the tour... I don't remember what they were, but the tour guide had no idea how to answer them and tried to make up stuff. It was funny.

Great campsite, at the foot of the catalinas!!
